The hurried practice schedule on Friday at Chicagoland Speedway presented a major challenge for teams like the Wood Brothers who aren’t locked into a starting spot for Saturday’s LifeLock.com 400. With just two short sessions with only a brief break in between, the team had to divide its efforts between preparing for the race and working on a qualifying set-up that will get them in the show. But when it came time to “go or go home” in qualifying, driver Bill Elliott and the crew of the Motorcraft/Quick Lane Ford Fusion stepped up in a big way, bettering their best speed of the day by more than three miles per hour to safely secure a starting spot in the race. Elliott and the familiar red No. 21 Motorcraft/Quick Lane Fusion will line up 29th for Saturday’s 400 miler. Team co-owner Eddie Wood said the David Hyder-led crew followed its game plan on Friday, spending the first practice session doing race runs then switched over to a qualifying set-up. But it was a bold call at the last minute by Hyder and Elliott that made the most difference when a place on the starting grid was at stake. “Hyder made some major chassis changes right in the middle of qualifying practice,” Wood said. “It worked just like he’d hoped it would, and Bill picked up more than a half a second over what our best lap was in practice.” In major league auto racing, a half-second a lap makes a tremendous difference. For the Wood Brothers, it was the difference in making the race and going home early. “We’re just happy to be in the show,” Wood said. The LifeLock.com 400 will be televised on TNT, with the green flag set to fly at 7:30 p.m. Eastern time.

    Go Wild Bill !!!!!

  2. MAYBE THE WOOD BROTHERS NEED TO GO TO TWO TEAMS NEXT YEAR….MAKE A DEAL WITH KASEY KAHNE AND BRING BUD OVER….I’D LOVE TO SEE KASEY AND BILL RACING TOGETHER AGAIN…

  3. Well, thank you Wood Bros. A third into the race and my man is stuck a lap down in 32nd. You bums should thank your lucky stars that Bill Elliott is driving your junk….. If it wasn’t for him having such a big heart to help you guys out, I doubt that your car would even make the race. AAAAAHHHH!!!!! nothin like a good mid-race vent session. I feel better now. WooHoo! Goooooo Bill !!!!!!!!!!!!

  4. He was running 32nd before the crash. He finished 37th. Although I know he didn’t want to be in a wreck, he was probably glad to put the car out of it’s misery.
I love ya Bill, but man you got to get a new ride…….#9

  5. OK………HERE’S THE DEAL……..RAY EVERHAM IS COMING BACK…..THE 9 , 19 , AND 43 WILL HAVE EMPTY SEATS……..KING RICHARD …PUT EVERHAM IN CHARGE AND HIRE BILL FOR THE 9 CAR AND THEN WE’LL HAVE SOMETHING TO WATCH IN 2011

  6. All one can really ask is if they are trying. I’m sure they are and will keep trying to get it right.. Indy & Michigan coming up !

  7. Im glad you are ok after that wreck Bill! You got hit hard…………..Good news is that the car can go back to the junk heap it belongs in. I just don’t know what this team can do differently to improve. Everybody I know is trying hard, just have no speed in race trim. I have a feeling with Indy being a flat track it is going to help us. We just can’t run on these big banked tracks. Bill if you want to race next year give the King a call, you would be very competetive over there, Good Luck at Indy Buddy!

  8. I love the idea of Bill in the 9! If Bud will stay on the car then money won’t be an issue. They had great years with Bill and Junior Johnson, so the history is there.
As for Ray, who knows. But, how about this idea, RPM puts Ray on top of the box and Bill in the seat? Together more wins, top5 and top 10 finishes than I think any combo out there would have….. It’s fun to speculate but I doubt any of us have ideas that Bill and family haven’t already thought of but we all get a kick out of suggesting them anyway… Very glad to see you walk away from the car last night Bill, hard hit, tough driver!

  9. Do you REALLY think it is the # 21cars fault …..race after race……….in back of the pack…? I hope Bill does well next year with Petty.
