Tradition is a big part of the culture and heritage of the Wood Brothers Motorcraft/Quick Lane race team, the family-owned outfit that has been a bedrock of NASCAR for the past 60 years.

The No. 21 team, throughout its existence, has been known for having hard-working, enterprising and dedicated people preparing their race cars. For many years, Leonard Wood, the brother of team founder Glen Wood, was the one leading the car-preparation effort. Today, that role is filled by David Hyder, who in many ways is like a modern-day Leonard Wood, only with some short-track driving experience on his resume.

Just as Leonard Wood once was known for working day and night to gain his team a mechanical advantage, Hyder is similarly driven to make his race cars the best they can be. Both are known for their careful attention to even the smallest details.

Even though Hyder and the Wood Brothers crew are running a limited Sprint Cup schedule, he and his crew put in a full-time effort.

On a recent night, while other Cup teams were traveling to Watkins Glen, Hyder was working late, spending time on the seven-post test rig, trying to wring a few more miles per hour from the Motorcraft/Quick Lane Ford Fusion that Bill Elliott will drive this weekend in the Michigan 400 at Michigan International Speedway.

It’s the car that the team debuted at Indianapolis Motor Speedway a couple of weeks ago, one that showed great promise in the Brickyard 400 as Elliott was among the fastest in practice and drove from 31st to 18th in the race.

Hyder said he’s been working to find a good balance on the car’s handling and likes what he’s seen so far.

“It’s a good car,” he said. “We changed some things around for Indy, and it reacted as we expected to the adjustments we made during the race,” Hyder said.

The track at Michigan will pose different challenges than Indianapolis, but Hyder is preparing to conquer them. He said the sweeping turns require a chassis set-up that will allow Elliott to have plenty of rear grip when he takes off down the long, fast straightaways. And those straights will give Elliott a chance to put his FR9 Ford engine, a winner two weeks ago at Pocono with Roush Fenway Racing’s Greg Biffle at the wheel, to good use.

Hyder also is aware that many Michigan races over the years have boiled down to fuel mileage, and he’s got that aspect covered too. Team co-owner Len Wood generally figures fuel mileage and plans strategies as his father Glen Wood once did, and Hyder is plenty confident in his abilities.

“I’ll put Len up there against anybody on pit road as far as fuel mileage calculations,” Hyder said.

Even though Hyder sees lots of improvement in his race team this season, like Leonard Wood in an earlier era, he’s not content to sit on his accomplishments to date.

“We’re trying to get better and better, and we’ve got to keep moving forward,” he said. “We’ve got our work cut out for us, but we’ve got a lot of good people working for us, and we’ll have better results before the end of the year.”

He’d like nothing better than to kick things off with a strong run at Michigan, in the backyard of the headquarters of Ford Motor Company.

“Working for the Wood Brothers, we all bleed Ford blue,” he said.

Qualifying for the Michigan is set for 3:40 p.m. on Friday, and the race gets the green flag on Sunday just after 1 p.m. with TV coverage on ESPN.

  1. Still hopeful to get to see the Elliotts @ Michigan… If not then hope you have a great weekend there Bill !

  2. Go get em’ at MIS Bill. Thats your house.

  3. Good luck this weekend at Michigan Bill.Michigan has always been a track that you run well at.Hopefully Hyder can get the car dialed in for you.I’m sure you will qualify well, but glad to see that the past champion provisional goes to you if need be.The first cup race I attended was at the june Michigan race in 1989 that you won, that was awesome.

  4. Looking foreward to seeing Bill run Michigan. It is beginning to look like the #9 will be available for Chase when he gets to Nationwide & Sprint Cup. That would be super.

  5. The team appears to be reacting to changing track conditions much better based on the Brickyard race. I’m hoping to see Bill and the 21 car in the top 15 at the end of the day.
If it comes down to gas mileage, and it may, maybe the first top 10 of the season.

  6. If we have a top 15 start and top twenty run it would be a good week. Check out this link of Bill’s stats by track. His Michigan stats are Awesome. 29 top tens leads the pack and is nearly 50% of the races he has ran. Average start of 10.5 and average finish of 14.5
It mind blwoing how well this man has ran here over the years. He should of had a few more wins there at MIS.

  7. Need sponsorship for next year! Bill is OK to run a full schedule and we can’t get a sponsor? The economy is worse than we think! A STRONG run in Michigan can cure the ailment(s)!!! Bring it to the front, BIG MAN!!!!!!!

  8. Bill Elliott was the man years ago at MIS. I saw him beat Earnhardt there in Aug of 87 and have been there cheering on Bill and the Fords ever since.
One race which comes to mind was with Ray when Bill was experiencing tranny issues and he was
shifting the thing out of gear then into gear in the corners while driving with one hand and running laps
    as fast as the leaders.
Bill Elliott is by far the most underrated Nascar driver ever. ( in my opinion )

Best of Luck to the whole 21 Team

  9. Always pulling for the Awesome One! I will be tuned into every lap Sunday keeping an eye on the 21 Ford. Best of Luck Bill, and 21 Wood Bros.!

  10. CNDBILLFAN, I also remember that race. Some people cant drive on the interstate with TWO hands and Bill was holding the shifter in 4th through the corner with one hand and driving with the other. That takes talent my friends.

  11. Is it a blue paint job again this weekend ?

  12. Yea, that race at Michigan where the tranny acted, up, I think Bill wound up 14th – embarrassing for 15th-43rd who finished behind him. The sad thing is though, without the tranny issue, that would have been one in the W column!!

  13. Another W should have came in the June race of 1990. Bill dominated the whole race and some oil fitting lets go a few laps from the end. Unfortunately, Earnhardt won that day.

  14. Time to qualify !!!

  15. Practiced 25th. Qualified 30th. I hate to jump the gun, but I think we all know where this is going.
Still a fan, just wish the car was at least half as good as the driver.

  16. Still have 2 more practice sessions to go so a lot can happen. If they can keep up on the car during the race like at Indy they might be ok. The problem is getting the car good at the beginning of the race to avoid going a lap down early. Going a lap down at a place like Michigan early is always painful to watch because we all know how great of a driver Bill is and how he can motor around the place (actually he can motor around any track better than anyone else out there). just wish that sponsorship would come along soon to be able to run more races for more track time. I think the crew needs the track time to know how to better prepare the car week in and week out. Dont get me wrong, I believe they try extremely hard every time but there is only so much they can do at the shop and once a month at the track.

Good luck Bill, I will be pulling for the 21 as always

  17. Half a second off. Actually .574. How close is that? Blink an eye. That close. Damn. Imagine if we had some money. This team has immense potential. Full season/sponsor-ship would go a long way! Come on Bill. Work some magic! That’s what it is going to take!

  18. Don’t forget fuel mileage folks. Michigan is notoriously a fuel mileage track and I’ve noticed on more than one occasion the 21 team stretching their fuel windows further than most of the field.

  19. I would like to see a good run based on fuel mileage for sure….but…I really want to see the team blow past cars on the track lol. I enjoy seeing the positions go past at the top of the screen and see where Bill moved up spots instead of slipping back. I am watching practice now and the team is 24th so far on the charts. They really need to hit the setup today because the weather should be about the same tomorrow. They just showed Bill and Reutimann running together on the track and they talked about Reutimann but did not mention one word on Bill for over a minute. Frustrating being a huge fan but because of his postition they wont even mention a past champions name. I will be laughing when they show the racing world what they can do when they hit the setup and Bill blows by all these so-called “stars” of the sport. Go Bill!!!!
