Bill Elliott and the crew of the No. 21 Motorcraft/Quick Lane Ford Fusion got an opportunity to take a few chances in qualifying for Sunday’s Carfax 400 at Michigan International Speedway.
Their chassis tweaks didn’t work out just like they’d planned, but they’re still solidly in the show for Sunday, which is the most important thing on pole day for a team running a partial schedule and therefore not eligible for a guaranteed starting position each week.
This time around, the Wood Brothers team did have some breathing room because Elliott was the only past Sprint Cup champion in the field, thus ensuring him a starting spot. So the team decided to loosen the chassis in an attempt to grab a spot near the top of the starting grid.
But the sun popped out hot just as Elliott took his turn against the clock and the car would be too loose, resulting in a lap at 184.431 miles per hour, which puts him 30th on the starting grid.
But spirits were high in the Motorcraft/Quick Lane pits because the team was focused on making its car faster, not just getting it into the show.
“We had good speed,” team co-owner Eddie Wood said. “We were good in Turns One and Two, but we were just too tight in Turns Three and Four in practice.
“Since Bill was locked into the field, we loosened up the car, but it wound up being a little too loose.”
Wood pointed out that while the perception is that a loose race car is fast, that’s not exactly the case. Having a car that rolls freely through the corners is best, he said.
“When a car is too loose, the only way a driver can adjust for that is to back off the gas,” he said. “But if it’s too tight, they can still stay in the throttle. It’s a very hard task to get the balance just right.”
The Motorcraft/Quick Lane crew is encouraged by the performance of the No. 21 on Friday, knowing that when the change is made from a two-lap qualifying set-up to one designed for a 400-mile run the car should be closer to a balance that will allow Elliott to drive toward the front of the field.
“When we open up the grille for race trim, so the air flows through the radiator, it should balance it out, and we’ll be just fine,” Wood said.
The Carfax 400 is set to get the green flag on Sunday just after 1 p.m. with TV coverage on ESPN.
We will be good Sunday. Have some fun out there Bill.
Good luck sunday Bill. I will cheering or you and the woods.
Good luck on Sunday Bill. Hope it is a good day!
Still think the “King” should put Bill in the 9 car next season. Bill Elliott, Ford and the #9 now that is a winning combination!
2nd that TMAC52!
Go Bill, Your Still AWESOME!!!
Thanks Barry, It’s a great idea and one that would surely create some great media for any sponsor. Now if I just had an extra 20 million bucks to make it happen. But someobody out there does.
Either way I’ll be listening on the in-car and couch crew chiefing on Sunday.
Go get um Bill!
OK, so in the previous post I said that the weather would be overcast but now watching the pre-race it looks like its going to be sunny and warmer lol.. So hopefully the setup will be good at the start to stay on the lead lap and work on the car all day. If Bill can finish 14th here while holding the shifter in 4th and driving with one hand through the corners than I am sure he can handle the warmer, slicker track. haha
Man, I cant wait for this race to start. Go Bill!!!!!
Might as well start conserving gas! We can’t run up front, no speed off the corners
Last chance for a decent finish. Appears we’re gonna take the wave around. Hope we can take advantage. Need some well-timed luck!
Caution out!! Not Us!! Dare I ask for more luck?
With 2 laps to go, Bill is running faster than the leader!! And by a bunch. I wish they hadn’t pitted that last caution. He made up 6 spots since the restart. But, the car seemed to again take too long to come in. Oh well, it’s just good to watch Bill race.
I haven’t heard how Chase did last night – but how bout Casey?!?!? Congrats on a big win in the ARCA series on a road coarse.
Dang! Bill was around Sadler for most of the race and he didn’t pit that last time and wound up 9th. I wish the Wood Bros wood take a few more chances given that they are not in the points race anyway.
Let’s see. Bill beat Newman, Burton, J GORDON, Martin, Hornish, Jr to name a few (and none of them wrrecked). Of course, those guys should retire because they are too old to compete when an old man like Bill beats them. Oh wait, I’m sure Bill was just in their way, holding them up -right?
Great job Bill and Woods. We got it home in one piece. Back to back top 25 finishes and making gaines. FORD just needs to put some $$$ behind this deal and lets go run up front. Nascar is taking several motors to the dyno. Would like to hear how the FORDS stack up. I think we are down on the ponies. Only Jack’s teams get the best motors. The rest fo the Fords have to suffer I reckon.
Good run Bill! Yea, Bill was fast at the end!The car just takes too long to get going. I think WBR needs to hire a engineer or somthing. They just need to find about 1sec or so. The balance or somthing is off just a little. I dont know why Ford want send a team of engineers and a pocket full money to help that team. I just don’t get it! WBR is getting beet consistently by that 78 car! I don’t know but I bet there getting less money than WBR. All ready looking forward to the next race!!! GO GETEM BILL!!!!
Brian, Keep in mind the 78 car get cars from Henrick and motors from Earnhardt/Childress Engine shop. That said, Ford could without a doubt do more to help WBR. Maybe with Marcos leaving the 47 Little Debbie might take another look at WBR. I’m sure that everything that can be done to attract a sponsor is being done.
Anyway, good run yesterday, car looked good several periods during the race, lots of runs in the low/mid 41sec. range.
Is there anywhere to get lap times for all drivers (without having to pay)?
Chase won at Mobile but I am covered up with Casey’s win at New Jersey. [Wonderful probalem to have all of these young talented kids winning hugh!] Will get something on the sight soon.
Great Job Chase and Casey
Thanks! It was a lot of fun!
Great Job Cindy. Can’t leave you out. I bet you work you tail off keeping up with these racers. LOL
