Simplified Points System Instituted For 2012

Touring Series Will Intergrate National Series Structure

Official Release
November 29, 2011 – 3:02pm

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – NASCAR announced today that the points system all NASCAR national series began using this year will be instituted in the regional touring level for 2012.

The points system was simplified to make it easier for fans, competitors and the industry to understand.

Beginning in 2012, the system will be integrated into the NASCAR K&N Pro Series East, NASCAR K&N Pro Series West, NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour, NASCAR Whelen Southern Modified Tour, NASCAR Canadian Tire Series and NASCAR Mexico Series.

The new structure awards points in one-point increments. As an example, race winners earn 43 points, plus three bonus points for the win. Drivers also can earn an extra point for leading a lap and leading the most laps, bringing the race-winning total to a possible maximum of 48 points.

All other drivers in a finishing order are separated by one-point increments. A second-place finisher earns 42 points, a third-place driver 41 points, and so on.

“Implementing the simplified points system at the regional touring level will make the points structure consistent with the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series, NASCAR Nationwide Series and NASCAR Camping World Truck Series,” said George Silbermann, NASCAR vice president, regional and touring series. “The change at the national level was welcomed in the industry this year and has provided a points system that is much easier for everyone to understand.”

This year’s NASCAR Chase for the Sprint Cup ™ demonstrated that use of the new points structure is viable with a shorter schedule, such as with each touring series.

“Considering the tight competition in NASCAR’s touring series, we anticipate that with the new points system in place we will see close championship battles similar to the ones this year in all NASCAR national series,” Silbermann said.

The move to bring the simplified points system from NASCAR’s national series to the regional touring level is part of an effort to integrate uniform race formats and procedures throughout the NASCAR ranks. Earlier this year, two race procedures were changed to bring the touring series in line with the national series. One of those procedures stipulated that if a green-white-checkered finish is necessary, a maximum of three attempts will be made. The other change directed that on all restarts, passing will not be permitted until the car reached the start-finish line.

In some cases, race procedures developed at the touring level have been adopted at the national level. In 2009, the double-file restarts that had come about in the regional series, became a part of the national series race procedures.

  1. I wonder if Bill is in Vegas? Do they invite past drivers? Hope that changes and Bill gets another ride somehow? SHR & Hendrick are dissappointing me, with Tony a new champion, he should be able to get sponsorship to put Bill in races that Danica is not in. Best for Danica and Bill WOULD win a race or two if given 25 or so chances in that equipment, a great media story while he is driving and winning.
Have not given up hope and will not until I hear SHR went in a different direction. I still think it is a good sign that they may be thinking Bill when they did not put Martin in that position. Bill’s champ provision is helpful…but not really needed with Bill at the wheel!
Bill, call Rick & Tony, give them something to think about. just saying…worth a try…what fun it would be…hope you read this. Cindy, make him read it!
    Thank-you.

  2. I agree Rick W

  3. Bill is the best choice

  4. Go Bill

  5. rumor is darian grubb may go to gibbs and crew chief denny hamlims team. that would leave mike ford out. i still stand by my thoughts of him coming to stewart hauss and crew chief danika and bill. it would be a awesome situation and she would def. benefit from them both. the car would be up to speed right off the bat.

  6. Mike Ford and Awesome Bill returning and helping Danica grow would be a great situation and if Bill could rip off some good runs for them you never know. All I know is that man has always known how to drive a race car and its a shame he isn’t out there getting to do it. Here’s to hoping Bill can find something that is fitting. All I know is I’ve really been enjoying Chase during Bill’s time of absence. I’ve kept up more with him than anything Nascar though I kept checking to see if Tony would pull of the championship. Cindy I may be out of line for asking and if so I more than understand you now answering, but are Bill and Tony still close friends?

  15. Penske may be looking for a new driver. How about Bill!!? The Elliotts made a name for themselves using Penske’s old equipment. Not sure what kind of commitment Chase has with Hendrick, probably nothing long term in Cup, so he could take over for Bill when he’s ready for cup. Don’t understand why sponsors and owners can’t think like Elliott fans!?

  16. Oh, and Roger could hire Mike Ford also. Bill, I don’t think this will happen unless you call Roger yourself…

  17. Smartest move Penske has made in years. Decent driver but PR nightmare. Penske couldn’t keep a good crew chief who would put up with Kurt. This late in the game he might be running Nationwide next year.

  18. Chase is awesome!
Hey Dale, thanks for twitter atta boy for making that call on the tweet. Chase was owed one and he got it.
As far as Kurt goes , I wouldn’t hire him to drive a nail. He’s an idiot and needs another lesson from Jimmy Spencer. Lol. I loved it when Jimmy did that.

  19. Wow that was an exciting finish…I watched it like……50 times!!!

  20. Vote for Chase for ESPN Who’s next in motorsports.

  21. Oh Boy Something new to vote for every day. What are the rules on this one?

  22. Shannon, Im so glad you put that video up from you-tube. That was an awesome race. I miss Bill so bad, and am not ready to see him retire. Its so cool to know that Chase is gonna be keeping #9 at the front for years to come. I want me a Chase Elliott T-shirt. Any ideas how to purchase one?? May sound crazy, I just seemed to always have better luck when I was wearing my Awesome Bill T-shirts. I got a nice one from the Thunderbird days. I put it up since it was to special to me wear anymore..

  23. Same as the most popular driver.

  24. Do you know how long the voting goes on?

  25. Cindy can you put a link up on your, Bills and Chases Twitter and facebook pages please.

  26. Voting ends December 18, 2011. So lets get voting.

  27. I tried to vote twice and it wouldn’t let me even after deleting cookies. Everyone needs to get voting, he is in second behind Force, the pretty one. LOL If anyone figures it out post it on the site. There are no rules posted.

  28. I’ve been voting off and on all afternoon. After you vote, close that window. Open a new window and delete your cookies and history. Then go back to that page where you can vote. Best if you bookmark that page before you vote. Let me know if that works for you. The way I have it figured is Chase is about 300 votes back.

  29. Chase Ellioitt T-shirts can be purchased at:

  30. Just got home…Chase, you are simply “Awesome”. What a video of last 5 laps, gave me the same feeling as seeing your Dad win all these years. You have incredible talent and so much more time to get even better and keep all your fans so happy, Thank-you. Awesome finish!!
Here is hoping that Bill gets the ride with SHR, Mike Ford as crew chief would be an immediate bonus, but not needed as Bill can work with anyone.
Gotta go and get voting…Go, Elliotts, Go !!!!

  31. Bill would fit right into the #22 just like he did the #9 Dodge for Everham. Bill can get it done better than Busch.

  32. Cindy – not asking for anything official at all….just curious. Given the option, would Awesome Bill prefer a full time ride with Penske, or a part-time ride shared with Danica with SHR?

Merry Christmas to the whole Elliott family, and congrats Chase on the Derby win!!

  33. Which every car was the best prepared.

  34. oh boy my little rumors from my earlier post may be true, now we need my thoughts on what to do with mike ford and bill to come true

  35. Bill should get the #22 its prepared well enough for Bill to do good, Let Bill race a full schedule and see what the X champ can do for the 22 Organization

  36. Bill is a tweaker Busch was a whiner, thats all the difference in racing that #22 car

  37. guess Bill wont drive the #22 AJ got the job, hmmm he has a long way to go yet

  38. Hmm Kurt Busch has the 51 ride he and Finch are of the same stock, how fitting
