UPDATE: The Daytona 500 will be on the big screen at The Georgia Racing Hall of Fame when the green flag drops.

Dawsonville, Ga. – The Georgia Racing Hall of Fame in Dawsonville, GA, is inviting race fans to come enjoy the Daytona 500 with them this weekend.

On Sunday, Feb. 26, the GRHOF will have Sunday’s running of the Daytona 500 on the big screen for fans and friends at the Hall of Fame.  An invite to the 500 watching party is included with the purchase of any ticket to tour the Hall on that day.

Fans can also see a special display featuring two Georgia Daytona winners.  The display will include the 1987 Daytona 500 winning car of Bill Elliott, which is also the car that set the all-time stock car speed record at Daytona, with lap in excess of 210 mph.  Also on display will be Gober Sosebee’s Daytona Beach winning car, which is one of the only winning cars on the beach to still survive in race trim today (right down to the original tires the car traveled down the beach on).  Sosebee’s Ford set the all time NASCAR speed record on the beach in 1949, serving as the perfect car to view with Elliott’s record setting Ford.

To top it all off, the display will also include several of the trophies won at Daytona over the years that are currently housed at the Hall of Fame, including both of Elliott’s Daytona 500 winning trophies and Sosebee’s 1950 winning trophy from the beach.

There will also be a concession stand open to take care of your hunger and thirst needs as you watch the drivers duke it out on the Daytona high banks.

It’s a chance to see racing history, and to watch racing history being made at the same time.

The GRHOF Daytona watching party kicks off when the doors open at 10 am Sunday morning at the Georgia Racing Hall of Fame, located inside the Dawsonville Municipal Complex in Dawsonville, Georgia.  Ticket prices are Adults $4, Seniors $3, and Child (7-13) $2.  Children 6-under are free.

For more information or for directions to the Hall of Fame, call the Hall of Fame at (706) 216-RACE (7223) or go online to

  1. Well, the first dual SUCKED. What was looking like a good chance to get in just got a lot worse. Now either the 2 cars ahead of Labonte on qly’ing time have to finish top 2 in this race or Bill has to be one of the top 2 go or go-homers.

Come on Bill – take it to the front, win this thing and start the Daytona 500 from the 4th postition!! (or just be the 2nd place go or go homer and I’ll still be HAPPY).

  2. Its was over at the drop of the green. Pathetic couldn’t even stay in the lead draft

  3. WEll he tried. And if you don’t try you don’t race.

  4. Car looked way down on horsepower…certainly not his fault-wouldn’t matter who was driving the car just wasn’t fast enough.

  5. He gave it all it had…. and thats all you can do.
    We get’m next time AB

  6. One DNQ doesn’t change a thing… Bill is still the man. Always will be. See ya in July Awesome Bill!

  7. Disappointing. Maybe next time.

  8. Was just great to see you out there Bill.Cant wait til next time.

  9. That was a joke.

  10. Bill did try ,Terry Labonte didn’t try that ticked me off.

  11. I’m happy he was there. There’s nobody that tries any harder than Bill. He’ll be back and probably have a good engine next time.

  12. Well guys and girls I have one great big consolation to Bill not making the race….Mikey Waltrip didn’t make it either….Darrell made every excuse in the book for him…..
One more thing I know I won’t be glued to the TV Sunday…
    One more thing Danica crashed
    Bill is still Awesome

  13. Cindy was there any issue with power on the second engine? It looked like he couldn’t pull up with the pack at the start. Even though he wasn’t close it was still exciting to see Bill racing.

  14. Bill good try today, we sill love you being out there! Looked like the car had little power, oh well. Hope to see out there in the future!

  15. Your right Cindy! That is more than I say for Terry. He just pulled in. Get em next time Bill.

  16. If there was we will never know it. But I am sure there was.

  17. Good to see you in the car again Bill. You will get em next time.

  18. On to more positive news: Chase took the pole in tonights race at New Smyrna and Ben Kennedy qualified outside pole. A draw of 4 will have Chase starting 4th Ben 3rd!

  19. Good luck tonight Congrats on the pole

  20. Mabey next time Bill you will get asked to drive a Hotrod….can only do so much with what you have to work with. It was nice to at least get to keep up with what was going on with you this week. Good luck tonight Chase.

  21. Hey Bill still got track time in a car which will help him when he comes back in July. Once again I thank Joe for giving Bill a chance to get in the big show. Elliott just needs to keep his name out there and I’m sure he will get some more opportunities this year. I’ve always said Daytona owes him a Pepsi 400 victory. He was by far the best car in 2000. I hope he claims that victory in July. Maddest I’ve ever seen Bill. I could have chucked a rock and Mike Skinners car from Virginia that night I was so upset. He is going to have a stout piece for that race and Elliott knows how to drive Daytona. GO BILL! Congrats to Chase on the Pole!

  22. Bill did his job and helped Joe make it in the 500 by drafting with him after Joe lost the pack. Bill making it would have been a bonus. I respect Bills effort and I’m sure Nemechek does too.

  23. Well dang! he’ll make it in july. My friend told me he seen Chase at the hendrick shop yesterday practicing pit stops. too bad i wasn’t there to see him. Go getem Chase i’ll be watchen or listening.

  24. Awesome Bill making the 500 with Labonte trying as well was a long shot. I do believe though, Awesome Bill had fun running the car on the new track surface and hanging out at the track.
Anytime I get to see a race with Bill Elliott in it is good enough for this fan.

  25. A little disappointing but it was good to see Bill out there and I’m sure he loved being around the garage all week and doing what he loves. He’ll probably go give Chase’s crew a hand now and he’ll be lovin that too. I hope he gets a few more shots in a good peice. I’d love to see him fighting for a win one more time…..that Toyota just looked so underpowered, you could see within a few laps he wasn’t gonna be able to hang with the pack.

  26. I was upset that Bill didn’t make it, but we all know if his car could have made it, he would have. I just can’t stand watching racing anymore. This is the only racing site I ever read, because its kinda a forum for fans like me. I miss it so much, but powers that be, that run the sport, have made a mess of it. Just like many family run companies, later generations screw them up. Happened in NASCAR. Brian France’s decisions have been devestating. I pray for Chase that the sport dosen’t go the way of the IRL or CART. They were screwed up because massive teams destroyed competition. But what do I know, I’m only a Dr.

  27. Thanks again, Joe, for the opportunity.

  28. Sure would have liked to see Bill in the 500. Maybe he’ll have a better car for the July race. Congrats Chase, hope you do well! Can’t wait to see you in cup series.

  29. On to July, hopefully a better car then. Good-Luck Chase!

  30. We all know that Joe’s primary Daytona car shouldn’t be as good as a Hendrick, Rousch, or Penske car. So, what do you expect from a secondary car from Joe’s shop. I respect Joe and Bill for making the attempt. I’m sure Bill isn’t devastated, he still has his health and a GREAT family to go home to.

  31. Had to be motor issues, Bill and Joe were turning 197+ drafting together in practice but could barely get 195+ drafting at the end of the duel. I’m betting the Turner piece (HMS car) he will have in July will be a bit faster.

Thanks Joe for putting Bill in a car for the duels it was great to see him on track!!!

  32. was happy to see bill on the track again. I am sure he gave it all. thank Joe for giving him a change. It would have made the 500 a lot more interesting to me. good luck Bill and I look forward to seeing race again.

  33. Valiant effort.. I didn’t get to watch but it does sound as simple as not enough engine so something must have gone awry.. It is possible to see Bill sub for some team should someone become ill or hurt or even suspended.. Ya never know. Bill, Cindy & Chase-I hope to see you all somewhere this year to get you all to sign my dash.. Too bad ya aren’t able to see this collection I have ! : )

  34. I thought it was all rigged! The guys who were locked in just fell back!!!

  35. very sad see you all in July…. Chase go get em

  36. The reason Bill is not in the 500 is because team owners can sell the points from their car to the highest bidder. Which by the way I don’t think they should be allowed to do. If they couldn’t do that both Bill and Terry would have made this race because the 32 car was in the top 35 in points.
That being said good luck to Chase and his Bill Elliott Racing teammate Ben Kennedy.

  37. People need to clarity when you write something like pathetic about the run. It really makes you look bad and sounds insulting. Bill can’t magically make a car that isn’t running well run better. Had Bill had a chance to get to the pits on a yellow maybe something could have been done. We all know Joe can’t compete with Hendrick and Roush. When Bill runs for Turner he will have one of the best cars he has probably seen since 2003. Bill got precious time at the track and I’m sure was able to take note of some thing he can put to use in July. Who’s to say Bill won’t get an offer to drive a car before then elsewhere? You never know but we should always be supportive of Bill in all that he does.

  38. Cindy, I was wondering what are Bill’s thoughts (or yours) on the past champions provisional? A lot of people are saying it should go away.

  39. NEWS FROM BER:

    http://www.speed51.com/2012_Stories/PLM/Massey_Release_2-24.html

  40. i’ll be pulling for the #9 Ford tomorrow.. can’t get myself to root for anyone else..

  41. just my observations for this week….First, We need to be thankful for Joe giving Bill a ride..considering they threw this thing together really quick…it was a good effort.
All i remember us asking for was a chance for the 500 and we got it, they were just a bit unlucky is all. Hopefully other opps will come because of their efforts. Second, I have no problem with Kurt Busch but I cant stand James Finch, I would never want to see anyone hurt so i will never say i hope kurt tears up all his cars, even if he is doing a good job of it, so i will say i hope they all blow up just as soon as he bumps the starter!! Third I am looking for more good things for Bill, Chase and the Elliott racing crew….Thanks Cindy you have been great on this site, we all appreciate your efforts!!!!

  42. How about BEDD driver John King winning the truck race??!! Good for him, and also a good showing by Roderick before getting taken out in that wreck in the NNS Race

  43. I think the past champions provisional is something that was earned by the driver, be it Bill, Terry or whoever. That said, I think it should be reserved in such a way that the champion must make a valid attempt to QUALIFY for the race. That means Terry runs the whole 150 miles, not 8 or 9 laps and gets to use his past champion spot. In this scenerio Terry would have not been eligible based on not making a valid effort to race his way into the 500.

  44. How many steering wheels will kurt Bush hand Finch this year?

  45. Past Champions Provisional was created for Richard petty, I like the fact that someone “A Champion of the sport” that has earned the respect of NASCAR enough to race when his equipment may not be good enough to allow him to qualify for a race, but may I also add that it should not be limited to just one Champion. Every Champion should have earned the respect and loyalty of NASCAR that would allow them to race, They need to understand that these men” Past Champions” have loyal earned followers that want to see them on the track. I also fault NASCAR with them “Past Champions” not making the race because of this crappy” Top 35” If you disagree with Past Champions Provisional, surely you can’t agree with this Top 35 in points being guaranteed to race no matter what….and one more thing buying points where did this crap come from?????????? With these things in mind everyone that shows up should be allowed to race…just my opinion……

  46. yeah Ted I heard that comment too.. we all have to listen to the waltrips ?! i think NOT..

  47. Nascar is dying a slow painful death. One look at the empty grandstands at any given race will tell you that.
The older race fans had drivers which they could relate to whether it be a Jarrett, Allison, Petty, Waltrip, Rudd, Mc Duffie, Kulwicki and so on. How do we relate to a Jimmie Johnson married to a model and living in Manhatten? This is supposed to be Nascar not Hollywood. Nascar has lost touch with its real fans and in doing so messed up the competition ie cars of tommorrow and such along with gloirifying little pretty boys and girl drivers who NO ONE can relate to so therefore no interest and not as many ticket sales.
Until Nascar realizes that the Rudds, Earnhardts and Elliotts made the sport as popular as it is and not the next JG or JJ, this fan and many others are tuning out.

  48. I always root for the 9 in everything.Dont matter what it is,lotto, horses, keno, its all about the 9.Hope they can get it for Chase when he gets up to cup.

  49. Past champions should be able to race anytrack any race if they choose to. Nascar is killing them selves with their Child racers like Kyle and Kurt, Stewart with his mad fits. Edwards shaking his fist at Kenseth a Team mate where do these idots come from???

  50. I have said for some time that I thought NASCAR had an issue with Bill. Now i know it’s true. How do you have top 10 moments at Daytona and not have Bill Elliott in one of them. Derrick Cope, and Mark Martin loosing COME ON MAN!! So, can somebody tell me why NASCAR has the red a$$ for Bill Elliott! I just dont get it???

Please leave these two fields as-is:
